Homeless Shelters for Veterans: VA Programs, Shelter Access, and Support
If you need shelter tonight, you don't have to read first — search shelters near you or call 211 or use your local 211 service.
Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838) or use VA's online chat. VA states that the service is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.
Local steps vary. A veteran can also contact a nearby shelter, VA medical center, outreach worker, or 211.
What the VA call center can do
The call center connects veterans and people calling on their behalf with trained responders and the nearest VA homelessness resources. It does not guarantee immediate shelter, a voucher, or housing.
Be prepared to provide basic information about the veteran, location, current sleeping situation, safety, and contact method.
Veteran-specific shelter and outreach programs
Communities may have veteran-focused emergency shelter, transitional housing, outreach, or Grant and Per Diem programs. Some general shelters also coordinate with VA staff.
Ask whether the program:
- serves veterans directly;
- requires a VA or community referral;
- accepts walk-ins;
- has transportation;
- can connect with a VA medical center; and
- serves families or couples.
HUD-VASH
HUD-VASH combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services from VA.
HUD-VASH is permanent housing assistance, not an emergency shelter. Eligibility, referral, prioritization, and voucher availability are determined through VA and local housing-agency processes. Calling the national center is a practical starting point.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families
SSVF funds community organizations that help eligible very-low-income veteran families who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. Depending on local program design and funding, services may include outreach, case management, housing search, and temporary financial assistance.
SSVF is not a guaranteed cash benefit. Contact an official local provider to ask about current eligibility and available assistance.
Health Care for Homeless Veterans
VA's Health Care for Homeless Veterans programs conduct outreach and connect eligible veterans with health care, case management, residential services, and community resources.
A veteran does not need to understand which program is appropriate before calling. The call center or local VA can help identify the next contact.
What to do if shelter is needed tonight
- Call 1-877-424-3838.
- Ask the local VA medical center for the homeless-program coordinator.
- Search local emergency shelters and call before traveling.
- Ask 211 about overflow, severe-weather, and veteran-specific options.
- Call 911 for immediate danger or a medical emergency.
- For a suicide or mental-health crisis, call 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.
What to bring
Bring available identification, military or discharge documents, benefits information, medication lists, and contact details. Do not wait to call because a document is missing. Ask the provider what alternatives it accepts.
2025 veteran homelessness data
HUD estimated that approximately 32,495 veterans experienced homelessness on a single night in January 2025, the lowest count in the federal series. This is a national estimate and does not indicate whether a local program has space.
Find local shelter options
Use the directory to locate nearby shelters, then call to confirm whether they serve veterans and whether intake is open.
